Should I Smoke at the Bar Smoking and drinking always seem to go together; or at least they do in our image of the typical bar scene. But when you go to a bar in the UK, there is one thing that you should remember: Smoking in public places, including bars, is illegal in the UK. The ban against smoking took effect in Britain on the 1st of July 2007. This means that smoking is no longer permitted in bars, restaurants, hotels and other public places. Those caught doing so may get in trouble with the law. But most bar owners do recognise the need that some of their patrons may have to smoke in between pints. For this, these bar owners have provided enclosures or beer gardens where their patrons may smoke in peace. Nonetheless, if you are to use such a facility at the bar, you are still expected to observe some rules. One such rule is to use the ashtray to dispose of your ash and your cigarette butts. Never dispose your cigarette butts by just grinding on them with your heel on the ground. It may not get you in trouble with the law, but it is possible for the bar to lose their license over it. Smoking still has its proper place in the bar. Please do observe it when you have to have a smoke whilst drinking there. |
